42Q & SDA: Modernize Legacy Factories Without Ripping and Replacing

Connect Your Control Layer to the Cloud with 42Q, Software Defined Automation, and Amazon Web Services
Bridge the IT/OT divide with a unified, cloud-native digital layer built directly on top of your existing automation infrastructure, mitigating downtime risk
The Modernization Dilemma: Stalled Transformations
Digital transformation is essential to stay competitive, but traditional upgrade paths are blocked by the fear of long deployment cycles, high costs, and catastrophic downtime. Research shows that on average, only 35% of digital transformations see full success. If your facility is managing a mix of aging controllers and siloed systems, you are likely battling:
Overcoming Existing System Vulnerabilities
-
Shopfloor Blind Spots: Operators have no automated way of knowing if a machine's PLC has the correct product program version loaded or if a valid backup exists before hit running.
-
Vendor Lock-In: Rigid dependencies across PLC, HMI, and robot controllers limit your operational agility.
-
Manual Vulnerabilities: Relying on manual change tracking and tribal knowledge introduces severe risks of human error.
-
Disjointed Software Layers: Manually bridging the gap between physical factory hardware and your MES layer is complex and labor-intensive.
About Software Defined Automation
Software Defined Automation Inc. provides an Industrial DevOps platform for automation engineers. The company standardizes PLC backup, version control, documentation, PLC engineering and secure remote access across vendors, enabling factories to increase uptime, strengthen OT security and reduce the cost of change.
SDA is headquartered in Boston, with a subsidiary in Munich, and works with global customers.
The Solution: From Controller to Cloud
Youu don’t need to replace your functioning hardware. Our solution layers modern digital capabilities directly over your existing ecosystem to deliver immediate ROI. This end-to-end modernization stack seamlessly integrates three industry-leading solutions:
MES Intelligence by 42Q
Cloud-native, globally deployable MES that provides real-time production visibility, orchestrates shopfloor workflows, and enforces absolute quality control.
Industrial DevOps by SDA
The system of record for your control layer, offering automated, vendor-agnostic backups, change tracking, and secure, browser-based remote engineering.
Cloud Infrastructure by AWS
Secure, scalable edge-to-cloud architecture providing enterprise-grade data protection, SOC 2 Type 2 compliance, and minimal IT overhead
Feature Focus: The Automated Quality Stop-Gate
This integration eliminates production errors caused by incorrect machine programming. 42Q acts as an intelligent 'Start/Stop' permission gate, querying SDA to ensure physical PLCs only run verified, approved code versions
1. Operator Scan
The operator scans a unit's serial number at the 42Q Production Workbench. By default, the physical machine's "Start" command is held in a disabled state by the 42Q Edge device.
2. Automatic Verification
42Q Edge queries SDA via API to verify the exact program name, version, and synchronization status required for this specific part number
3. Safe Production Start
Once all criteria match, the 42Q Edge device transmits an unlock signal via MQTT to the PLC, enabling the physical start button so the operator can safely begin
The Magic Moment
If someone modifies code on the floor or an un-synchronized project version is active, the 42Q PWB instantly halts the process and blocks the physical machine from starting. Because SDA acts as the absolute source of truth for your code, 42Q prevents the line from ever running an invalid program and creating costly scrap
